Aussie recruit Dylan Skee is being tipped to be a success at Whitehaven – by former Recre favourite Rob Purdham. Skee was a regular in Harlequins' second-string this year, and Quins skipper Purdham reckons he will thrive at the Recreation Ground. "He's a good player and will be a better one playing more challenging rugby," said Purdham.

The 23-year-old has been on loan from Hull Kingston Rovers since July after his initial one-month switch was extended until the end of the 2009 campaign. And Esders said he is "really pleased" to have agreed terms with Quins after a promising time in his six appearances since arriving at the Stoop.

Harlequins have signed Hull Kingston Rovers back row Ryan Esders on a one-year contract. The 23-year-old initially joined the Quins on loan for a month back in July, a deal which was extended until the end of the season. Esders becomes the London side's first signing for next season, after making six appearances and scoring two tries during his loan spell.

I'm really pleased to have signed for Harlequins. The coaching staff have been great with me, especially Brian McDermott who has been helpful and takes his time to work on my game   -Ryan Esders

Harlequins have signed back-row forward Ryan Esders from Hull KR following a loan spell in the capital. The 23-year-old becomes the first new signing the club has made this season, after agreeing a one-year contract. He made just one substitute appearance for Rovers, but has played in six matches for Quins, scoring two tries.

Esders is a promising young player. We're glad he has chosen to further his career at Harlequins.   -Brian McDermott

Brian McDermott is urging his Harlequins RL side to forget the past and look to the future as they prepare for their final two games of the Super League season. Despite a horror run of nine defeats in their last ten games, wins against Castleford and Warrington will still see Quins make the end-of-season play-offs. And McDermott reckons that is not beyond his injury-hit side.

Harlequins looked a shadow of the side that reached the dizzy heights of fourth place earlier in the season as they crashed to a 26-6 defeat to Hull FC. This contest was effectively over after 14 minutes as Hull took advantage of a Quins side that were toothless in attack and lacklustre in defence. Tommy Lee put the first score on the board for the hosts, latching on to Mark Calderwood's hack through to touch down.

Brian McDermott has torn into his misfiring stars after Harlequins RL all but blew their Super League play-off hopes at the weekend. Saturday's turgid, desperate 26-22 Stoop loss to lowly Salford City Reds proved the nadir of a season that has spiralled out of control in recent times. The defeat, Quins' fifth home setback in a row and their eighth defeat in nine games, means the Londoners will probably have to win all three of their remaining games, starting at Hull on Friday night.

We will not make the play-offs playing like that, and in a way I am glad if that is what we are producing.   -Brian McDermott
